Hoax Bomb Threat at Morton East HS Delays School Monday

Officials and bomb-sniffing dogs found no explosives Monday morning after a sweep of the school.

Cicero, IL - Cicero police ordered Morton East High School closed Monday morning after officials at the school received a phone call from someone who claimed, “Morton East is going to blow up.”

Police now believe the threat was a hoax and the school is safe, according to Town of Cicero spokesman Ray Hanania.

The call came in around 7:45 a.m., and the voice on the line sounded young, Cicero police reported.

Investigators from Cook County and the City of Chicago were contacted, and bomb-sniffing dogs from Metra helped Cicero police search and examine the high school in a two-hour sweep, according to Hanania.

No bombs or explosive devices were found, and students were allowed into the school. A statement on the school website says school will be in session for the rest of the day.

Police will continue to investigate the hoax threat in an effort to identify the caller.

“It’s horrible that someone would do something like this,” Hanania said in a statement.
