Learn Everything There is to Know About Your Property With Oak Park's Maps App

New features will continue to roll out as the application develops, too.

Looking for a safer walking route to your kids' school? Maybe you need info on the nearest parking permit site, or you've forgotten which days refuse and recycling services stop by your home.

If you live in Oak Park, you can now look up all three of those things — and more — through a GPS-centric application called "Village Maps."

According to Oak Park's website, the idea of the maps portal is to tie important information for residents to specific village addresses. The project is made possible through the village's participation in the GIS Consortium, a "collective of local governments working together to develop and implement new technologies they can share."

This is what the maps application can do now:

  • Tell you if your property is in a historic district
  • Identify safe walking routes
  • Fetch detailed info about every parkway tree
  • Find the nearest parking permit site
  • Remind you of refuse and recycling hauling dates
  • Give you information about specific school districts
  • Show you aerial and terrain views of the village
  • Allow you to measure distance and area
  • Allows you to draw, create and print your own maps

This is what it's expected to do as it continues to develop:

  • Offer information about voting precincts
  • More extensive information about school districts, including their boundaries

Certain features of the maps aren't available to public view, but they're really helpful for public safety officials. Those things include detailed information about fire hydrant locations and flow rates, police resource allocation tactics and critical knowledge about registered residents with special needs.

Want to try it? Click here, then type in an Oak Park address and press "find." There's plenty to play with.
