Mike, 33, a graduate of OPRF High School, played youth baseball, enjoyed Scouting, and loved the Chicago Cubs. Mike also loved music and participated in the worship team at First Pres every chance he had, even while suffering the increasing debilitation of Duchenne Muscular Dystrophy.

“Music was such an important part of Mike’s life,” said Senior Pastor Paul Detterman. “Mike was never without an encouraging smile and words of hope. It is in that spirit we offer these bells to the community. Our hope is that when you hear the bells, they will elicit faith and hope,” Detterman said.

“Mike’s Bells,” as they will be called, will be installed this fall in the main tower of the First Presbyterian Church of River Forest and will mark the first time bells will sound from the church in over 40 years. Mike’s Bells will ring to mark special occasions throughout the year, and reflect the sound of hope which Mike embodied throughout his short life.
