Here are the top three stories today in Oak Park-River Forest:
- The first Green Transportation Rally will be held on Sunday, Oct. 8 from 3:00-5:00 p.m. at the Pilgrim Street Church parking lot. This event is hosted by Oak Park Climate Action Network and will celebrate emissions-free driving and active transportation. Attendees are urged to consider walking or biking to the event; however, if driving is necessary, free parking is offered at the OPRFHS Garage. (Oak Park Climate Action Network via Facebook)
- Eighth-grader Andrew Older from Roosevelt Middle School in River Forest is set to receive an Honorable Mention Award in the One Earth Young Filmmakers Contest for his film titled "Invasive Fish in the Des Plaines River." The Global Awards Celebration will take place on Sep. 17 in nearby Chicago, where Andrew's film will be recognized. His well-researched and well-written script addresses the issue of invasive goby fish and Asian carp affecting the native fish population in the Des Plaines River, showcasing the importance of taking action to mitigate this ecological threat. The One Earth Young Filmmakers Contest has grown from a local initiative to an international competition, with a focus on youth raising awareness about environmental challenges and solutions through film. - In case you missed it, Sparkle Aesthetics, a boutique medical spa in Oak Park, will soon be open in the candy-colored building on Madison Street and Home Avenue, offering skincare and facial injectable treatments. The spa, inspired by a 1960s design aesthetic reminiscent of "The Jetsons," aims to create a welcoming and comfortable environment for its clients. While the interior is nearly complete, the spa is awaiting its final certificate of occupancy for a grand opening, offering services such as Botox, fillers, laser hair removal, peels, and facials, as well as a unique "Sparkle Infusion" treatment and a photo booth for before-and-after pictures. The founder, Dani Sher, is also a practicing emergency medicine and trauma physician’s assistant, and she plans to use the expanded space for in-house training on her techniques. (Wednesday Journal)
