Here are the top stories today in Oak Park and River Forest:
1. In a private ceremony today, the Oak Park Fire Department will remember the lives lost on Sept. 11, 2001. Several neighboring communities are also remembering 9/11 today, 20 years after the attacks that took nearly 3,000 American lives, including nine from Illinois. (Paid source: Chicago Tribune)

2. River Forest is also remembering 9/11, inviting residents to join the fire department today for a moment of silence at 7:45 a.m. outside Village Hall. Police and fire crews were also on hand yesterday to commemorate the anniversary on the Concordia University quad, where 2,977 flags are displayed in remembrance. (VRF)
3. Fifty-nine residents tested positive for COVID-19 this week. The Oak Park Department of Public Health reports “more than a third of the new cases [are] in residents age 19 and younger.” (VOP)
4. The Village is seeking public input on the possibility of regulating short-term rental properties in Oak Park. Residents can view the proposed ordinance online and attend a virtual public meeting Sept. 23. (VOP)
5. COVID-19 transmission in Cook and McHenry counties has dropped slightly, from “high” to “substantial.” Cook County Department of Public Health senior medical officer Dr. Rachel Rubin attributes the improvement to residents following safety protocols: “If we continue to do all the small things well, a big improvement will surely follow.” (Daily Herald)
