Rep. Lilly Introduces Measure to Expand Civic Courses to Junior High

Lilly's measure calls for public elementary schools that have 7th or 8th grades in their curriculum to add courses on civics.

Submitted by the office of Rep. Camille Lilly.

Springfield, IL - Junior high students would be required to take one semester of a civics engagement course under a new proposal introduced recently state Rep. Camille Lilly, D-Chicago.

“Millennials have historically been one of the most disengaged generations when it comes to national, state and local government. I think we can change that by teaching our younger students about government and how it affects their daily life,” said Lilly. “Engaging our students at a younger age and educating them on the importance of civic engagement will hopefully spark their interest in government.”

Lilly’s measure calls for public elementary schools that have 7th or 8th grades in their curriculum to add a separate one semester course on civics-related courses with the goal of inspiring young students to take an interest within their schools and communities. The proposal also adds that these courses shall be necessary to take in order to receive an elementary diploma. Last year, the General Assembly passed legislation requiring one semester of a civics course for high school students prior to graduating.

“One of my top priorities as an elected official is striving for a better and fairer education for all students in our great state, and that should include studying and researching of our past history in politics and government,” said Lilly. “A well-rounded, quality education helps people reach their full potential, and having a better understanding of how our government works will only make our students more prepared for life outside the classroom.”
