Here are the top stories today in Oak Park-River Forest:

1. An Oak Park police officer opened fire on a funeral procession Monday after a driver waved a handgun from his vehicle’s passenger window. The “rowdy” procession was headed west on Roosevelt Road Thursday when the driver with the handgun accelerated in the direction of the police officer, who then fired his weapon. The incident is under investigation. (Wednesday Journal)

2. Oak Park’s churches announced Friday the Archdiocese of Chicago scenarios “that show potential models of how our parishes could be configured in the future,” the pastors wrote in a joint letter. Parishioners are asked to reflect on the options and provide feedback at an Oct. 4 meeting. The five potential options include uniting all four parishes under one team, or combining into two or three parishes. (Ascension)

3. The Village Plan Commission has revised its ordinance on accessory dwelling units in Oak Park. A public hearing will be held Oct. 7 to get feedback from residents, who have expressed concern about parking and taxes if the units are allowed. (Wednesday Journal)

4. An entire second grade classroom at Ames School in Riverside is in quarantine after four students tested positive for COVID-19. District 96’s testing program discovered the positive cases, but testing is not required. The second graders will now learn remotely for two weeks. (Landmark)

5. The Oak Park Department of Public Health is ready to administer boosters of the COVID-19 vaccine to eligible citizens. This includes people 65 and older, people with underlying medical conditions or work hazards, immunocompromised individuals and more. (VOP)
