Suspicious Man Shook Student in St. Vincent Ferrer Church: Police

River Forest police are asking for the community's help to identify the man.

River Forest, IL - River Forest police are trying to identify a suspicious man who reportedly entered St. Vincent Ferrer Church on Tuesday and shook a student.

Around 12:35 p.m., a man walked into the church at 7565 North Ave. and grabbed the shoulder and upper arm of a student who was sitting in the church, according to River Forest police.

The man shook the student's arm until another student turned to look at him, and he left the church shortly after.

Several students reported the incident to school staff, who informed River Forest police.

The man is described as white, 50 to 60 years old, heavy set with long gray hair pulled into a low ponytail, police reported. He may have been missing his right eye, he walked hunched over and he was wearing a red Chicago Blackhawks jacket.

Police are asking the community for help to identify the man.

River Forest School District 90 sent an email sharing this information to community members, and the district provided the following safety tips for children.

  • Practice the buddy system. Always try to walk in groups or with at least one other person.
  • Walk on sidewalks and other open areas rather than alleys that have less visibility.
  • Be aware of your surroundings and any strangers who are nearby.
  • If you have a concern about another person near you, go to a neighbor’s house, find an adult to help you, go into a store or other public place, or go back to school.
  • Never approach a vehicle unknown to you even if the occupant speaks to you.
  • Yell loudly and run if you feel you are in danger.
  • Be sure to tell your parents if something happens. Parents should contact the police and the school.
