ORLAND PARK, IL — Orland Grassland Volunteers will host an Earth Day celebration at the grasslands later, and others are invited to help with cleanup of the lands.

On April 22 from 9 a.m. til noon, everyone is invited to join the group in the effort.

"There will be plenty of tools and guidance for much-needed clearing of autumn olive, callery pear and other unwanted woodies," according to a release.

Weather permitting, it will all get burned in a brush pile fire. Treats will include brats that had been intended for the earlier Brats and Burn event that was weathered out this winter, and other good treats. If trash collecting is your thing, there will be plenty of trash bags and trash-picker sticks.

"This is a great way for people to really experience the prairie by getting off the path and walking on the wild side of the prairie. There’s nothing like the feeling of bringing back the vibrant good health of the prairie, providing habitat for species threatened and endangered that now call Orland Grassland home," said Pat Hayes, site steward.

This event is recommended for families with children over 10 years old. Minors must be accompanied by parents unless a part of a sponsored group. Organizations, clubs and those in need of community service hours are welcome. Volunteers will be working off the path, so dressing with sturdy shoes, sock-covered ankles and jeans is recommended. Bring binoculars—the grassland birds are arriving and out and about. Those attending should park in the lot on 167th just west of LaGrange Road and join them at the Outdoor Classroom via the bike trail spur just west of the parking lot.

Please RSVP so tools and food can be planned. For RSVPs, more information or questions, contact Marnie Baker at Marnie.Baker@gmail.com, or see the website at http://www.orlandgrassland.org.
