Cheyanne Valdez Finishes 20th at State Bowling Tourney

Cheyanne Valdez represented Oswego High School at the IHSA Girls Bowling State Finals this past weekend at Cherry Bowl Lanes in Rockford.

The first round of the tournament, held on Friday, February 10th, included 24 teams as well as 30 individual bowlers.  The six games on Friday determined which 12 teams and 30 individuals would advance to round two on Saturday.  Valdez rolled a pretty solid 605 three-game morning series on Friday, but struggled to find her shot in the afternoon to finish with a 195 average on the day.

Fortunately, this was just enough for her to advance to the second round of the tournament on Saturday, as she was the last individual to qualify, edging out the next bowler by just two pins.

Round two gave Valdez new life, and she took full advantage of her opportunity to return for the second day by rolling the best 6-game series of the day, and the fourth best of the entire tournament, a 1,376 (229 average) that brought her final overall tournament average to 212.  Her 3-game morning series on Saturday was one of about a dozen 700 series' for the entire tournament, a 738 that came from games of 244, 257, and 237.

Heading into the second day of the tournament, Valdez was in 62nd place overall, but her outstanding second round performance moved her up 42 spots to finish in 20th place overall.  Only a sophomore, the Panthers are looking forward to two more seasons with Valdez in the lineup!
