The Week in Plank Junior High Sports Feb. 6

Plank Cheerleading Squad

The Plank Junior High Cheerleading Squad completed an exceptional ICCA season with a seventh place finish in state competition this weekend.  Held in Springfield, Illinois, this prestigious event is attended by the top junior high squads in the state of Illinois.  Competing in the large junior high division, Plank’s Cheerleaders made everyone at Plank Junior High School proud.  Their sportsmanship, performance, and attention to detail resulted in an incredible season.  Plank Junior High School thanks the parent volunteers, junior coaches, Coach Burgoyne, Coach Kaskie, and our wonderful student athletes for a great year!

7th Grade Girls Basketball

The Lady Pirates opened the week playing undefeated Bednarcik.  The Pirates dug themselves a hole by committing early turnovers and couldn't come back.  The A team lost 42-23.

The B team started well, getting a 6 - 0 first quarter lead.  That quickly diminished though, and the B team lost 10-13.  Sarah Cardenas played excellent defense and grabbed 5 rebounds for Plank.

The next day, Plank's 7th grade girls’ basketball team got back on their winning track against Thompson.  The A team started slow, but exploded in the 2nd half.  Plank held Thompson scoreless the entire second half and scored 31 points to win by a final of 41 - 10.  Kailey Johnson led scoring with 24 points, Taylor Peck added 9 points, and Jasmine Ruiz grabbed 8 rebounds. 

The B team also put together a strong showing winning 12 - 8.  Emily Green scored 2 of her 4 points to seal the game in the closing seconds.  Hannah Menter also scored 4 points for the Pirates.

Finally, on Thursday the 7th grade girls lost to Kaneland.  The Pirates played a tough first half and found themselves trailing by 3 points.  After many turnovers in the 3rd quarter and only 2 points - Plank was down by 10.  A strong offensive 4th quarter brought Plank back but they couldn't finish, ending the game 25-19. 

The B team also lost 24-8.

 8th Grade Girls Basketball

The Lady Pirates opened the week playing the Bednarcik Bulldogs.  In the A game, the girls lost 42 – 18.  Deana Pieters led all scorers with 9 points.  In the B game, the girls lost 27 – 8.  Victoria Lockhart played aggressively on offense and defense. 

The following night, Plank’s 8th grade girls’ basketball team faced Thompson.  In the A game, the girls won an overtime thriller 20 – 18.  Danielle Gladysz and Deana Pieters led all scorers with 7 points.  Elizabeth Rinehart cleaned the glass with 8 rebounds.  In the B game, the girls lost 24 – 9.

Wrapping up the week, the Lady Pirates traveled to Kaneland.  In the A game, the girls lost 39 – 16 on Kaneland’s hot shooting.   Alexis Davis played tough on both ends of the floor and ended up with 10 points and 5 steals.  In the B game, the girls blew a fourth quarter lead and lost 18 – 13.  Mallory Weisbrodt led all scorers with 4 points.  The girls ended up with 30 rebounds.
