Armed Man Wanted In Shooting Has Been Found: Sheriff

Clarence M. Otis was found after police say he checked himself into a hospital in Winnebago County to treat injuries resulting from a crash.

OSWEGO, IL — A man wanted on charges of aggravated battery with a gun has been found, police said. According to the Kendall County Sheriff's Office, 28-year-old Clarence M. Otis checked himself into a hospital Tuesday in Winnebago County for medical treatment of injuries from a car crash and informed the medical staff that the police were searching for him.

The Rockford Police Department responded and will take Otis into custody after he is released from the hospital.

Sheriff's deputies responded to Route 52 and Lisbon Road for a report of a traffic crash just before 2:30 p.m. Thursday and learned that the man who was involved in the crash, later identified as Otis, had left the scene on foot, police said. Investigators also learned that Otis was wanted in connection with a shooting in Canton, Illinois, where police said he shot a 25-year-old woman and fled the scene in a silver Ford Focus, later reported stolen.

Deputies searched the area with the help of other police departments but was unable to find him. The Kendall County Sheriff’s Office reached out to surrounding law enforcement agencies and area hospitals providing information about the crash and the possibility Otis seeking medical treatment as a result of the crash.

The sheriff's office warned people to not approach Otis if he was spotted, as he was believed to be armed.

Otis had a warrant for one count of aggravated battery with a firearm, a Class X Felony, and one count of aggravated discharge of a firearm, a Class 1 Felony, police said.

The Kendall County investigation is still active and detectives will continue to work with supporting agencies to bring these cases to closure.
