Mother, Son Subdued Attacker After Fatal Chick-Fil-A Stabbing: Oswego Police
Police said the 19-year-old assailant killed a 52-year-old delivery driver, then remained inside the fast-food restaurant nearly 2 hours.

OSWEGO, IL — Police are crediting a 20-year-old man who was stabbed and wounded outside the Oswego Chick-fil-A, as well as his mother, with subduing an assailant who killed a delivery driver inside the fast-food restaurant hours earlier.
Police announced multiple charges against 19-year-old Darryl Lee. Jr., of the 1400 block of South Third Avenue in Kankakee, including first-degree murder, attempted first-degree murder, concealment of a homicidal death, aggravated battery and armed robbery in the knife attacks early Wednesday.

According to police, timestamps on surveillance footage showed that a delivery driver, identified as 52-year-old Tracey J. Land of Bridgeview, was making a delivery to the restaurant at 3:10 a.m. when Lee broke in through a back door and attacked him with a hammer and a knife, killing him.
Land suffered multiple traumatic injuries and was pronounced dead at the scene, police said.

Police say they believe that after killing Land, Lee remained inside the Chick-fil-A, attempting to clean up the crime scene.
Nearly two hours later, two maintenance workers, a 20-year-old man and his mother, were outside the restaurant and unaware that Lee was inside and had killed Land, according to police. At 4:56 a.m., authorities say Lee exited the restaurant and attacked the 20-year-old man from behind, stabbing him with a knife.
Despite his injuries, Oswego police say the man was able to subdue Lee with help from his mother, who was on site working with him. The 20-year-old remains hospitalized in stable condition, police said.
Investigators "have no knowledge" that the suspect and victims knew each other, spokesperson Cathy Nevara told Patch on Friday. It's unclear whether the suspect first broke into the restaurant to rob it or to hurt the delivery driver. Nevara said she could not say "to maintain the integrity of the prosecution."
"The Oswego Police Department would like to acknowledge the courageous acts of these two workers, a son and a mother, which resulted in the capture of the offender," police said in a Thursday evening news release.
Lee is also charged with armed violence and burglary. Police allege the man "took property of the deceased while armed with a dangerous weapon," leading to the charges, Nevara said.
He was taken to the Kendall County Jail, where he remains in custody. He was scheduled to appear in court Friday, officials said.
Police said they previously interacted with Lee during a "suspicious circumstances" call in September, when they say he called police, saying he saw people in a vehicle with handguns. Responding officers were unable to corroborate his claim.
Oswego police expressed gratitude to "the multiple agencies who assisted in the investigation," namely the Montgomery Police Department, Kendall County Sheriff’s Office, the Kendall County Major Crimes Task Force, the Kendall County State’s Attorney’s Office and the Kendall County Coroner’s Office.
"This was an unprovoked attack and resulted in a tragic loss of life," Oswego Police Chief Jason Bastin said in a statement. "Our hearts go out to the victims, their families, and everyone affected by this tragic incident."
The Chick-fil-A is in the 2700 block of Route 34, near the Portillo's restaurant that was also a site of tragedy earlier this year.
