DNA Match Leads To Arrest In 2007 Sexual Assault Case: Oswego PD

Arrest comes over a decade after a woman reported to Oswego police during July 2007 that she had been sexually assaulted by her cab driver.

OSWEGO, IL — Oswego Police announced Friday the arrest of a Chicago man accused of a sexual assault that reportedly took place during July 2007. According to a release from Oswego police, 37-year-old Mustafa Dikbas was arrested at 12:20 p.m. Friday at his home in the 2400 block of Grace Street, on a warrant issued by a Kendall County Judge, with a bond of $250,000 (10 percent to apply). Dikbas' arrest took place exactly three months after Oswego police were notified of a match with a DNA sample that was reportedly collected from Dikbas for a prior arrest in another jurisdiction.

As a result of the match, Oswego police obtained a search warrant to collect DNA from Dikbas to be sent for comparison with the case DNA profile, according to the release.

An extensive follow-up investigation by Oswego police detectives led to the Kendall County State's Attorney's Office approving a felony charge of criminal sexual assault against Dikbas on June 17, police said, followed by Friday's arrest.

Police said the victim didn't know the name of the cab company, or information about the car, but was able to provide a description of the driver.

Evidence was submitted to the Illinois State Police Crime Laboratory, but although a DNA profile of a male was developed and entered into the Combined DNA Index System (CODIS), there weren't any matches at that time, according to police.

Dikbas was taken to the Kendall County Public Safety Center Friday, where he awaits a court date, police said.
