Master Chief Behr started his military career in the U.S. Army but enlisted in the Navy shortly afterward in 1965. In the 1960s his career ranged from chipping paint to flying maitime anti-submarine patrols from the flight decks of the USS Wasp, Intrepid, and Yorktown. In the 1970s he transitioned to aircrew radar operator in the Lockheed P-3 Orion and continued his career in Naval Aviation. He was promoted rapidly, and was made Command Master Chief, the Navy's highest enlisted level, in the early 90s.
