Fire Prevention Week Begins with Open House

Oswego firefighters will travel to area schools this week to spread the message "Protect Your Family From Fire."

The kicked off Fire Prevention Week Sunday with an open house at Fire Station One.

The open house included a chance to meet firefighters, try on fire gear, climb on trucks, kids games and prizes and the always popular raffle to win a ride to school on a firetruck.

“This is really the most popular part of the open house,” said Fire Lt. John Cornish. “We take the kids to school and drive around a little bit. It’s really a cool activity.”

Three rides were up for grabs in the free raffle, and the winners will be contacted later this week, Cornish said.

The open house is the start of fire prevention week. Cornish said on-call firefighters will visit Oswego schools to talk to students about fire safety.

This year’s theme is “Protect Your Family From Fire.”

“This is really all about getting kids not to fear firefighters,” Cornish said. “In the past we’ve had kids in fires who are afraid of firefighters and they need to know we’re there to help.”
