Hey Mom and Dad, How Much Allowance Do Your Kids Get For Their Chores?

Parents, Patch wants to hear from you on the questions that get families talking.

Welcome to "Hey Mom and Dad"—a weekly feature in which we ask our Facebook fans to share their views on parenting. Every week, we get the conversation started by taking a look back at a question we asked parents the week before on Patch Facebook pages from around the area.

Many parents assign their children certain chores or other duties around the house in exchange for a regular allowance as a good way to instill work ethic and responsibility. But the range of money paid and work performed can vary significantly from house to house. That brings us to this week's question:

What is your kids’ allowance and what are the expectations for them to earn it?

Take a look at what people had to say and join the conversation in the comments section.

Kari G. My main expectation to earn money is not having to be asked. If I have to repeatedly remind or tell or argue then I won't be giving out any money. via Oswego Patch Facebook

Julie M. They get half their age (I have a 7- and 5-year old), and are expected to pick up after themselves and feed/water the dog. Throughout the week I deduct if they don't do a job or do it well. And I don't actually give them money - they have a "Bank of Mom & Dad" savings account I add to each week. They like seeing their money add up on paper! via Plainfield Patch Facebook

Ken M. 2 girls, 8 and 10, no allowance yet. Chores are done just as being a part of the family. For those who say it is good for them to learn how to manage money, I say, there is plenty of time for them to learn about handling money.  via Bolingbrook Patch

Jamie N. My kids don't get paid for chores. They live here, so it's part their responsibility to take care of our home. We give our 8 and 11 year old $10/month. They have to save a dollar of it. I like Heathers idea of donating a dollar too  The allowance is given regardless of the chores and is more about money management and independence. via Montgomery Patch Facebook
