High School Additions Get School Board Approval

Approving bond sale the next step.

The School Board voted unanimously Monday night to approve additions at both and high schools.

The project, which has a $27 million price tag for each school, will increase the capacity at the facilities to 3,200 students at an 88 percent utilization rate.

Board members are still debating whether to include a gym geared toward gymnastics for OHS, which is projected to cost an additional $580,000, and more physical education space at OEHS, which would tack on an extra $1.1 million to the price of the project.

If bonds are to be sold for the additions, the district will need to begin the process ths month. The district still has the authority to sell about $246 million more in bonds for construction, but that runs out Nov. 6.

“We’re up against the 11th hour as far as bond sales go,” Tim Neubauer, assistant superintendent for business and finance, said before the vote was taken. “We really, really implore the board to make a decision so we can give our people enough time to hit the market and sell bonds.”

The School Board plans to address the bond issue at a special board meeting which will likely be held next week.

The approval of the additions follows months of discussions after newly elected board members, along with Lynn Cullick and Laurie Pasteris,

Construction could begin as soon as March.
