Little White School Museum Seeking Oswego-Related Military Photos, Memorabilia

The photos will be used in the "Wall of Honor" during the museum's annual Veteran's Salute.

Oswego’s Little White School Museum is looking for photos, documents, uniforms, equipment, and other memorabilia connected to community residents who served in the military during any of the nation’s wars.

In particular, the museum is seeking photos of servicemen and women in uniform for inclusion in this year’s “Wall of Honor” during the museum’s annual Veteran’s Salute, set for Veterans’ Day weekend.

Assistant museum director Bob Stekl said the museum is interested in photos ranging from formal portraits of uniformed personnel to candid shots taken during their service, as well as draft cards, letters, commendations, uniforms, equipment, and other memorabilia.

“We’re accumulating as many photos of Oswegoans who have served in the military from the Civil War through the Vietnam War as we can,” Stekl said. “We’d like to add as many images and as much information of those who served as possible.”

“We’re especially interested in photos and other memorabilia of women who served in the military or as nurses or other military-related fields,” Stekl added.

Stekl noted that original photos need not be donated, although he added that the museum always prefers to obtain originals whenever possible.

“We can scan photos while their owners wait if they’re brought in to the museum on Thursdays from10 a.m. to 4 p.m. or Saturdays from 9 a.m. to noon when the archives is open,” Stekl said. “And we can make arrangements to scan them at other times as well.”

In addition, residents may scan their own photos and email them to the museum at director@littlewhiteschoolmuseum.org as long as they’re scanned with resolutions of at least 300 dpi, Stekl added.

The museum is located at 72 Polk Street (Jackson at Polk Street), just two blocks from Oswego’s historic downtown business district. Regular museum hours are 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Monday through Saturday and noon to 4 p.m. Sunday.
