Oswego East Alumna Wins Medal For Soil Monitoring Project

She was awarded in the NAACP's Afro-Academic, Cultural, Technological and Scientific Olympics Awards Ceremony.

OSWEGO, IL — A new Oswego East High School alumna received a medal for a soil monitoring project, Oswego Community Unit School District 308 announced Aug. 22.

Delia Akyea, a Class of 2025 graduate, took home a silver medal in the Afro-Academic, Cultural, Technological and Scientific Olympics Awards Ceremony (ACT-SO) for her project, titled "Soil Monitoring: Using Arduino Technology to Monitor Soil Moisture, pH, and CO2 Levels with Agricultural Contaminants."

An initiative by the NAACP, ACT-SO aims to foster academic and artistic excellence in high school students. The program features competitions in 33 categories in STEM, business, culinary arts, humanities, performing arts and visual arts.

Akyea was one of 10 DuPage County students recognized at the ACT-SO ceremony held on July 13 at the NAACP National Convention.

"We are so very proud of Delia for this outstanding accolade," Assistant Superintendent of High Schools Kristen Campbell said in a statement. "The depth of her research and advanced understanding of the subject matter is awe-inspiring and deserving of this recognition."
