With 25 years of teaching experience behind her, Howerton has provided "exceptional instruction in journalism, civic engagement, and writing" while focusing on students' academic and professional journalism journeys. She has also helped connect her students to internships, scholarships and professional journalism experiences.

Besides teaching 10th through 12th graders, Howerton serves as the English department chair overseeing curriculum, instruction and professional development, sponsors the National English Honor Society and is a leader with Oswego TAG (Travel Abroad Group).

The educator has also worked to transform Oswego High School's online student newspaper, 42Fifty, into a nationally recognized, award-winning publication.

"Amy's dedication to journalism and education will continue to inspire and shape the next generation of storytellers," the release states.

More than 470 high school teachers nominated for the award were narrowed down to 30 finalists. The award recipients will be named in the spring. By winning, they'll receive a $5,000 cash reward and a sabbatical provided by Northwestern University. Winners also become fellows of the Golden Apple Academy of Educators, a community that plays "an important role in preparing the next generation of teachers in the Golden Apple Scholars and Accelerators programs — initiatives dedicated to addressing the teacher shortage in Illinois."

"Great teachers change lives. These finalists exemplify the dedication and passion that define exceptional teaching," Alan Mather, president of Golden Apple, said in a statement. "Their commitment to fostering student growth and inspiring a love for learning enriches not only their classrooms but also the entire educational community. We are honored to recognize their invaluable contributions."
