Oswego Makes Money Magazine's List of 100 Best Places to Live in America

'Community surrounded by cornfields' checks in at No. 58.

Oswego residents already knew their village was a great place to live, and now MONEY Magazine's annual ranking of the best places to live in America has confirmed it.

Of the country’s 100 best small towns, Oswego nabbed a spot at 58.

“This community surrounded by cornfields an hour west of Chicago has managed to more than double in size over the last decade, due in part to unusually strong job growth,” according to MONEY Magazine’s summary of the village.

“Recreational opportunities also bring people here: The Fox River runs through the middle of town, and canoing, kayaking and fishing are popular. The jump in population has meant a greater focus on infrastructure development; many local schools have recently built additions. Next up: widening the streets.”

Other Illinois communities on the list include Carol Stream leading the way at 49, Glen Ellyn coming in at 54, and South Elgin just making the cut at 98.

Residents weighed in Monday about the honor on the Oswego Patch Facebook page.

  • Jim Lausier: ‎"Recreational opportunities are specifically cited for their high rating. I think a high-five should go to the Oswegoland Park District for helpin' with that.”
  • Matt Livingston: “Okay....that's very cool.”
  • Erik Gustafson: “Not to be disparaging, But Carol Stream rated higher? Not on my scale. Glen Ellyn is nice but I, for one, could not afford to live there and I am not sure if GE could be considered a small town, IMO.”
  • Kevin Carrelli: “I agree Jim the parks and bike paths are one reason we moved here. Good job Oswego!”
