Oswego police will participate in a statewide effort to "keep roads safe during one of the most celebrated drinking holidays of the year."
OSWEGO, IL — The Oswego Police Department is launching an enforcement campaign targeting impaired and dangerous driving ahead of St. Patrick's Day.
From March 7-18, police will participate in the statewide effort to "keep roads safe during one of the most celebrated drinking holidays of the year." St. Patrick's Day falls on Monday, March 17.
The Oswego Police Department is joining the Illinois Department of Transportation, Illinois State Police and local law enforcement agencies to conduct roadside safety checks, seat belt enforcement zones and saturation patrols.

The campaign also emphasizes the "Click It or Ticket" initiative to remind drivers to buckle up for every trip. Plus, speeding, distracted driving and all traffic laws will be strictly enforced.
"With St. Patrick's Day falling on a Monday this year, we expect increased celebrations throughout the weekend prior," police spokesperson Cathy Nevara said in a statement. "We urge everyone to celebrate responsibly. Please plan ahead for a sober ride home before you leave the house, your safety and the safety of others depends on it."

Police shared the following tips ahead of the Irish holiday:
- Drunk or high, it doesn't matter. It is never okay to drive impaired. Designate a sober driver or plan to use public transportation or a ride service to get home safely.
- If you see an impaired driver on the road, contact law enforcement.
- Have a friend who is about to drive impaired? Take the keys away and plan to get your friend home safely.
- Always buckle up.
