Update: Downed Power Line Still Has Route 34 Closed

The Oswego Police released the following information on its Facebook page at about 1:30 p.m. Tuesday.

Due to the early morning storms, high winds caused extensive damage throughout the downtown area. Large trees and downed powerlines made the morning commute difficult and dangerous. We appreciate everyone's patience with traffic control. 

Route 34 from Washington Street westbound to Route 34 and Orchard has been closed since 7am. A downed power line that is crossing the street has made it extremely dangerous for the motoring public as well as local residents. Com-Ed has been advised and is working on sending a crew to the location to fix the issue. Please avoid this area until further notice.

Also, as of 2 p.m. ComEd was still reporting about 2,000 Oswego-area customers are without power, according to its outage map. A ComEd spokeswoman said the company does not have a specific timeframe of when power could be restored.

The storm that swept through the area last night and early this morning has left about 2,000 residents in the area without power.

“The downtown and Boulder Hill areas were affected pretty severely as far as power goes,” said Oswego Battalion Chief Jeff Warren.

The storm also took out some traffic lights at Route 31 and Mill Road, and routes 31 and 34.

“But everywhere else lights seem to be working,” Warren said.

On Bereman Road in Boulder Hill, a tree branch brought some power lines down on a detached garage. There were reports the downed wires caused the garage to catch on fire, but Warren said that wasn’t the case.
