Oswego's New Grocery Store Won't Stay A Mystery For Much Longer: Village

The name of the grocery store being constructed at the corner of Route 34 and Kendall Point Drive could be unveiled as early as November.

OSWEGO, IL — As Oswego residents wait with bated breath for the village's newest grocery store, the business's identity remains a secret as the early stages of construction kick off.

It could be as soon as before the year's end that Benderson Development, the Florida-based group overseeing the project, announces the tenant of the store at Route 34 and Kendall Point Drive, Economic Development Director Kevin Leighty told Patch.

"It will likely come soon, possibly as early as November," he wrote in an email on Monday. "It just depends on when their building plans are finalized, and permits have been released."

Next February will mark one year since Oswego trustees approved Benderson's application for a grocery store, restaurant and bank on 5 acres of undeveloped land. No specific tenants were named in the proposal.

Benderson tentatively plans to start the interior buildout of the store in early 2026, according to Leighty. The developer is eyeing complete construction ahead of a grand opening by mid-to-late 2026.

Crews will begin mobilizing the site early this week, potentially starting work as early as Monday, Leighty said on Friday afternoon.

"They would have started right after completing site work, but their main hold up was getting additional approvals from agencies outside of the Village of Oswego’s authority," he said. "While the village’s plan review had already been completed, permits cannot be issued until all other agencies have signed off. Fortunately, Benderson has now been issued permits to start the building foundation work."

Once the foundation is laid, crews will begin vertical construction on the 12,500-square-foot grocery store. The village is expecting construction to continue through the winter months.
