Own a Truck? Lock the Tailgate

Police warning residents of tailgate thefts in past six months.

Between May 2 and Oct. 14 the Oswego Police Department has taken reports for six thefts of tailgates from pickup trucks. 

These thefts have occurred in business parking lots and residential driveways.  All six of the tailgates have been taken off Ford trucks.  Two were off Ford F250s, three were off Ford F350s and one was off a Ford F450. The model years were three 2008s, one  2010, and two 2011s.

The cost to replace these averages $4,200.

We would like to remind truck owners that most tailgates can be locked. When the tailgate is locked it cannot be removed.  If you are the owner of a newer Ford pickup truck, or any truck that with a locking tailgate, please take a few extra seconds to lock it and help prevent these thefts.

If you own a pickup truck without a locking tailgate please secure your truck in a garage or back it up to the garage door close enough not to allow it to be opened.
