Trader Joe's Is Opening In Oswego, Village President Says, But Location Remains A Mystery

OSWEGO, IL — Trader Joe's is coming to Oswego, Village President Ryan Kauffman announced Wednesday.

"Obviously, the village has known for a very long time," Kauffman said at the Oswego Area of Commerce legislative luncheon. "We couldn't say it because it's not really our news to give. ... We just received an email a minute ago saying, 'Go ahead.'"

Kauffman also shared the news in a post on Facebook but said the popular grocer has "not announced a timeline or location yet." Economic Development Director Kevin Leighty told Patch the village learned "within the past week" that Trader Joe's confirmed their plans for an Oswego outpost.

A mystery grocery store, approved in February with no users named in the application, is under construction at the corner of Route 34 and Kendall Point Drive, but it's unclear if this is where the Trader Joe's will be.

A report from WSPY News shared that Trader Joe's was the mystery store coming to Route 34. But on Wednesday, Leighty told Patch the village still did not have an announcement from Benderson Development, the group overseeing the project. In late October, Leighty said that Benderson was likely to publicize the tenant as early as November.

Asked if Trader Joe's was the mystery store, Oswego Communications Manager Lisset Padilla reaffirmed to Patch that no location was confirmed.

"The company has stated that during its planning process, many locations are considered and confirmed sites will be listed on their website," Padilla said. "We understand the community’s interest and excitement, and we will continue to share updates through official Village channels as more information becomes available."

The new Trader Joe's will be the first to open in Kendall County. Currently, the nearest store to Oswego is located in Naperville.
