What began as a fun, family-friendly way to bring the community together each summer has grown into a heartwarming tradition with an even deeper purpose. The Stagg Track and Field Summer Classic Track Meet returns Thursday, July 24, at 6pm, welcoming participants ages 2 and up to hit the track, reconnect, and raise money for the Lupus Foundation of America.
The event, hosted by Stagg High School’s track and field program, has become a beloved summer highlight for staff, students, alumni, local youth groups, and families across the community.
“This meet has always been about connection—between neighbors, former students, and our youngest future Chargers,” said the event’s organizer Zach Spoor, division chair for Social Studies, Foreign Language and Art. “There’s something really special about seeing our graduates return and watching tiny kids take off down the track with huge smiles.”

The meet features a variety of age-appropriate events, from a 25-meter dash for toddlers to a full mile run for older participants, along with field events like the long jump, high jump, and throws.
What started as a way to cover the cost of continuing the event has evolved into a meaningful fundraiser. In 2019, after the event founder’s mother passed away from complications related to Lupus, the team chose to donate all proceeds to the Lupus Foundation of America—a tradition that continues today.
The event is extra special for Spoor, whose daughter participates. “It’s full circle for me—watching her take part in something that means so much to our family and community.”

The Stagg Summer Classic typically draws between 60-100 participants, but organizers hope to see those numbers grow in the coming years. All are welcome to join for an evening of fun, fitness, and philanthropy.
Pre-registration is encouraged. The event begins at 6pm and costs $10 for individuals and $30 for families. For more event details or to register, visit: staggtf.com
