Check Overpayment Scam Attempt Reported In Palos Hills

A potential client gave them a check for more than what the services cost, told them to take out their fees and send the balance back.

PALOS HILLS, IL — A Palos Hills resident filed a delayed, suspicious circumstances report with Palos Hills police on Nov. 10, after recognizing a scam attempt.

The resident told police that a potential client gave them a check for more than what the services cost, take out their fees and send the remaining balance back.

Realizing it was a scam attempt, the resident called 911.

According to the Federal Trade Commission, which has issued an alert, check overpayment scams target consumers selling vehicles, services and other valuables through classified ads, social media marketplaces or online auction sites. A check overpayment scam begins when a scam artist replies to the classified ad or auction[post, and offers to purchase the item for sale with a check. The scammer comes up with a reason for overpaying, and asks the consumer to wire back the difference, leaving consumers liable for the entire amount.
