The 5 Most Inspirational Stories of Palos Patch's First Year
A look back at some of the courageous people we have profiled throughout the course of our first year.

Some of the most meaningful stories Palos Patch has covered during our first year have been profiles of local residents doing amazing things. I have had the pleasure to meet and talk with a number of inspirational individuals.
As part of our look back at the past year, it is my pleasure to bring you five of my favorites:
- Tyler Lukasik — Tyler was diagnosed with cancer after a soccer injury during a game at . He underwent treatment while attending school. In March of this year he stood in front of Shepard's student body to tell his story during the school's St. Baldrick's Day event.
- Jacki Frederking — A dean at Shepard, Frederking has been a longtime advocate of cancer-related causes and Relay for Life. She started District 230's enormously successful Relay for Life events, and since moving over to Shepard she has filled the school with that same spirit.
- Elsie's Pantry Volunteers — We often hear stories about the declining economy and the real toll it takes on families all over the country. Not many people devote themselves to helping those families with the passion that these volunteers do. Located inside , the pantry's client list has grown at a rapid pace.

- Connor Mish — For someone so young, Connor Mish sure is comfortable talking about his struggles and successes. When I met Connor, he was about to graduate eighth grade and was in the middle of holding a benefit for Crohn's disease, from which he suffers. Connor and his family have raised about $75,000 for Crohn's-related causes.

- The Treasure Chest — Patch takes volunteerism very seriously. As part of that mission, employees are encouraged to volunteer their time several times a year for local charitable causes. Around Christmas, myself and other local editors spent time working at the Treasure Chest in Orland Park. The organization donates toys to children staying in area hospitals. We met some of the workers and supporters who have contributed to the growth of this organization.
