100 Car Pileup Shuts Down Interstate 39 Overnight

All lanes were reopened by 1:30 p.m. Friday, according to the Illinois State Police

EL PASO, IL — Thursday's wintry conditions led to multiple crashes involving more than 100 vehicles along Interstate 39 near El Paso. Illinois State Police said I-39 southbound from Normal to Minonk closed Thursday afternoon after the 3:13 p.m. crash.

UPDATE: On Friday, at approximately 11:56 a.m., the Interstate 39 northbound lanes reopened and at approximately 1:30 p.m. the southbound lanes reopened.

ISP said in a news release it is working diligently with local partners to "ensure motorists are safely escorted from the area to warming centers."

Earlier in the day, traffic was being diverted from I-39 southbound at El Paso (Exit 14) onto IL 251 to bypass the crash site. El Paso is located about 30 miles east of Peoria.

Police continue to urge the public to use extreme caution and only travel if absolutely necessary.
