Dear Editor,
Purple was the color in Washington DC last month during the Alzheimer’s Impact Movement Advocacy Forum! Although I wasn’t able to attend, my fellow advocates met with our congressional office on Capitol Hill.
There were 1000 advocates meeting with our congressman and women to share personal stories and ask for continued support in fighting this horrible disease. Research has come so far in the 23 years since I lost my Mother to Alzheimer’s. Let’s not stop now! We still don’t have a cause or a cure so we must push on!
Alzheimer’s or another dementia can affect anyone. My Mother was 54! I have advocate friends that are dealing with this even at a younger age. Thankfully, Congress knows this fight isn’t red or blue—it’s purple. Our bipartisan champions have played an important role in accelerating the way our nation addresses this disease, but we can’t stop our progress now. That is why I’m asking our U.S. Senators , Dick Durbin and Tammy Duckworth, and Representative Darin LaHood to continue being leaders in this fight by supporting $113.485 million increase in research funding at the National Institutes of Health (NIH) for FY 2026.
The time is now to not only invest in progress but also invest in hope. We need to give 7 million Americans living with Alzheimer’s and 12 million caregivers a promise for the future.
As an advocate with Alzheimer’s Association Illinois Chapter, I am counting on your help.
