Kirk Wants to Screen 'The Interview' at Fundraiser

'We shouldn't have to ask North Korea for permission to see a movie,' the Republican senator up for re-election in 2016 tweeted.

U.S. Sen. Mark Kirk (R-Ill.) is the most recent person to volunteer to screen the film The Interview, the Seth Rogen-James Franco comedy that centers around a plot to assassinate North Korea’s leader.

In an interview Thursday, Dec. 18, on WBEZ-FM (91.5), Kirk said he will hold a re-election fundraiser event that would show the movie, which had its release delayed by Sony Pictures in the wake of a cyber-attack and threats of violence by a group called the Guardians of Peace, according to a Chicago Tribune report.

An FBI report late last week blamed claims the North Korean government is behind the Guardians of Peace and the cyberinvasion against Sony. However, some hacking and cybersecurity experts aren’t buying the FBI‘s findings and are picking apart the agency’s report, the Los Angeles Times reports.

“We shouldn’t have to ask #NorthKorea for permission to see a movie. I want to see @TheInterview. RT if you would too!” Kirk tweeted Friday, Dec. 19.

Kirk, who is up for re-election in 2016, joins Game of Thrones author George R.R. Martin as one of the individuals who would be willing to screen the movie if Sony permitted it. Hustler publisher Larry Flynt also plans to produce a porn parody of The Interview.
