PLAINFIELD, IL — Plainfield police uncovered a stolen and loaded firearm while on an assignment to investigate a "suspicious vehicle" in the early morning hours on June 14, officials said.

Officers were dispatched at about 3:04 a.m. June 14 to the vicinity of General Court and Brigade Lane where they found a black Toyota Camry parked on the side of the street with its engine running, headlights on and six people inside.

Approaching the sedan, "the officer observed smoke filling the interior of the vehicle and also detected a strong odor of burnt cannabis emitting from inside the vehicle," Cmdr. Anthony Novak told Patch in an email.

The officers asked all passengers to exit and searched the car to find a bag and a burnt cigarillo, both containing "a green leafy substance" suspected to be cannabis, and a bag with a black, loaded semi-automatic firearm. Within the bag was an identification card that officers "reasonably believed" belonged to Wade but later discovered it had been stolen from another municipality, Novak said.

Wade was charged with aggravated unlawful use of a firearm and possession of a stolen firearm and brought to the Plainfield Police Department for processing. He was issued a notice to appear and released from custody.
