Plainfield Coronavirus Update: Police Say 75 Cases As Of Sunday

The Plainfield Police Department reported Sunday evening that the village's coronavirus count had risen to 75.

PLAINFIELD, IL — The Plainfield Police Department reported Sunday evening that the total number of coronavirus cases in the village had risen to 75 over the weekend. So far, no deaths have been reported in the village, and but one recovery has been confirmed.

There is a discrepancy between the latest report from the Plainfield Police Department, and that from the Will County Health Department. According to the health department, there were 150 cases in Plainfield as of Monday afternoon. This discrepancy is based on several issues, representatives from both the police and health departments said.

The first is a difference in how the two agencies define Plainfield, Police Commander Anthony Novak said.

"The numbers that [the Will County Health Department] post include all three zip codes of the Plainfield mailing address," Novak said. "So a portion of those are within Joliet's jurisdiction, a portion of them are unincorporated, and they don't break it down by specific jurisdiction."

Novak added that the police receive a daily update from the health department, and from those figures have to determine which cases are occurring in Plainfield proper.

Steve Brady, a public information officer for the Will County Health Department, said that the constantly-evolving nature of a pandemic also complicates any notion of a consistent count across different public bodies.

"It's a very fluid, constantly changing situation," Brandy said. "In the time I'm speaking the count could [increase] again... It never stops, it just keeps going."

Brandy went on to say that a full accounting of coronavirus cases would likely not be achievable until after the crisis had passed entirely. According to the latest information from the health department, there have been 1693 coronavirus cases in the county to date, including 103 deaths.
