Comfort Food. Just reading those two words might bring to mind a serving of mashed potatoes and gravy. Or, perhaps comfort comes as a homemade pastry.
Or, maybe you crave the foods mom used to make - like meatloaf or spare ribs or roast pork.
At Taste of Eastern Europe on Renwick Road, comfort food makes up much of the menu. From the above listings to European favorites like pierogie or breaded pork tenderloin, what you will find here is good food that tastes homemade.
When I first entered Taste Of Eastern Europe, I wasn't sure I was going to be able to eat anything on the menu. I am a big fan of breaded pork tenderloin, but since having to give up gluten, that's not an option. So I asked as soon as I entered the restaurant whether there was anything on the menu I could eat if I could not eat gluten.
Turns out, I could have a pretty healthy meal. I could opt for the roast pork or chicken (I chose the pork), and while I could not have the mashed potatoes, I could have the boiled potatoes. Then I could opt for the cucumber salad, but not the sweet and sour cabbage (which was disappointing). I also could not have the gravy.
My server was very sympathetic about my inability to order certain things. But when my food came, there was no need to feel sorry for me. I had a plate full of flavorful, moist meat, potatoes and two sides (I opted for the cucumber salad and green beans).
I could only eat two of five of the slices of pork. Even after I was full, I had plenty of leftovers for another meal. My meal was only $10.95. And it came with dessert. Now I could not eat the kolaczki, but my oldest son said it was delicious.
Taste of Eastern Europe was the kind of restaurant you could come into and relax. The servers were kind and knowledgeable. And the food was well-prepared and tasted great.
Next time I go, I will have to bring someone who can eat breaded pork tenderloin and can tell me if it tastes like you bought it at a restaurant in Europe.
