Feed Your Child's Brain and Belly Before the School Bus Arrives

Morning comes early these days. The lazy days of summer are over and children are dragging themselves out of bed with their parents' help in hopes to be ready to go to school by the time the bus arrives. Even the kids who ride with their parents or walk to school are not completely in the groove of school yet.

But, skipping breakfast s not the answer. There are ways to make sure kids get that first meal of the day without mom or dad having to beg. There are 15 total ideas on this Web site. Here are our top 5 picks from the Parenting Web site list.

  1. "Dressed up Yogurt:" In this case, the site suggests adding fresh nuts and honey to ordinary yogurt along with some jam for a fruity flair. We think this has a perfect fall feel and is nutritious for the kids to take on the day.
  2. Fruit Smoothie: We love that the recipe on the site includes both frozen and fresh fruit. You can play with the ingredients, but at the end of the morning, you only have a dirty blender and glass and there are no dishes to wash.
  3. Homemade Granola Bars: Wait, what? Yes. Homemade granola bars. Their recipe calls for almonds, but what we like is the ability for the parent to control the ingredients for kids who have allergies. That eliminates the "may contain" issue with many boxed granola bars.
  4. Crustless Quiche Muffins: We added these to our top of the list not just because they are out-of-the-box thinking, but also because the photos look downright delicious.
  5. Chocolate Chip Banana Bread: In addition to sounding yummy, we love that the main ingredient is bananas. We know most parents buy the affordable fruit every time they go to the grocery store. Most of the time, unless you have a huge fruit fan in the house, one or two of them get brown. Here is a way to used them before they are unusable.
