Rep. Jan Schakowsky Won't Run For Re-Ection: Report

According to reports, Rep. Jan Schakowsky is planning to announce her retirement next month.

SKOKIE, IL – Rep. Jan Schakowsky is planning to announce next month she won't seek re-election in after 14 years, according to a report from Politico.

According to Politico, Schakowsky has begun to inform her allies that she has decided to retire, but is planning to make a more definitive statement at her annual Ultimate Women's Power Lunch on May 5.

The competition to represent Illinois' Ninth District is expected to attract many candidates, including Evanston Mayor Daniel Biss and State Sen. Laura Fine once Schakowsky's plans are made public. At the moment, the only candidate who has announced they will run for Schakowsky's seat is influencer Kat Abughazaleh.

Following news that Schakowsky won't seek re-election, Abughazaleh issued a statement.

"I want to thank Rep. Schakowsky for her decades of exceptional public service, both in the Illinois state legislature and the U.S. House of Representatives,” Kat Abughazaleh said. “I’m glad that Rep. Schakowsky understands that this moment calls for new leadership and I’m looking forward to pushing for even bolder, progressive change for the Ninth District and for the entire country."

Schakowsky was first elected in 1998 and has been an advocate for health care and senior issues throughout her time in the House. She currently serves on the House Energy and Commerce Committee and is a member of the Congressional Progressive Caucus.
