Skokie Offering Free Flu Shots Amid Rising Influenza Activity Statewide

As flu activity in Illinois climbs, Skokie officials are urging residents to get vaccinated for free.

SKOKIE, IL — Amid rising rates of flu and RSV over the holiday season, Skokie officials encouraged residents to visit the Health and Human Services Department for free vaccinations.

According to the Illinois Department of Public Health, just 21.9 percent of Illinoisans have received their flu shot this season, and only 6.9 percent have received their COVID-19 immunization. In Skokie, officials said the percentage of emergency room visits associated with the flu continues to increase and has surpassed last year's peak.

“Illinois is facing a significant winter surge in seasonal respiratory illnesses with flu activity at very high levels,” said IDPH Director Dr. Sameer Vohra. “Vaccinations remain the most effective tool to prevent severe illness from flu, COVID-19, and RSV. Simple steps like covering coughs and sneezes, washing hands regularly, staying home when sick if you are able, and improving ventilation are also critical to preventing further spread."
