Skokie 'Stand Against Racism' Efforts Take Virtual Turn

SKOKIE, IL — The annual Stand Against Racism initiative in Skokie will take on a virtual format this year due to the continued threat of the coronavirus. A physical gathering to represent the fight against racism originally planned for Thursday has been cancelled. Instead, residents are asked to utilize social media throughout the week to spread messages of positivity.

On Monday, Skokie Mayor George Van Dusen signed a proclamation that the village will join the YWCA Evanston/North Shore in Standing Against Racism efforts in all forms and will further pledge to continue working toward racial equality for all Skokie residents. The Skokie Human Relations Commission, Skokie village employees, houses of worship, businesses and community groups will join over 2,000 organizations nationwide to participate in virtual Stand Against Racism initiatives.

Residents area asked to create signs, tell stories, engage in a project or read the Stand Against Racism pledge with others and post these activities on social media with the hashtag #StandAgainstRacism. Photos also can be sent to info@skokie.org. A selection of these images will appear of the village's website and future editions of Skokie's newsletters.
