Skokie Star Student Spreads Awareness Around Mental Illness
The local 12th grader last year founded the Mental Health Matters club at Niles West High School.

SKOKIE, IL — Star Students are found in classrooms, on concert and theater stages and at debate lecterns, and out in the community doing good things to make life better for all of us.
Here at Patch, we've launched an initiative to help recognize Star Students, and we’re working to tell the stories of these outstanding kids to their neighbors.
This submission comes from Amy Kaye, a math teacher in Niles Township High School District 219. Kaye nominated Maggie, a 12th grader at Niles West High School.
Star local student’s name
Maggie
Why do you believe the star local student should be recognized?
Maggie is continually looking for ways to help our community. She started a Mental Health Matters Club at our school. She hopes to spread awareness around mental illness to help break the stigma. She was tired of the way that mental health is portrayed in our society as something to be hidden or ashamed of.
Maggie saw that other schools had a mental health club, and wanted to start one at our school. She wants to raise awareness and educate people something that affects millions of people around the world.
Maggie makes a positive impact on students and teachers around her, and adds so much to keep the atmosphere of the classroom constructive and productive.
What's one thing you want everyone to know about the star local student?
Maggie is going to change the world. She has changed our community for the better, making everyone around her feel comfortable and smile while doing it.
Congratulations on your achievements, and all of our best wishes to you in the future, Maggie!
