CHICAGO — A resident of a Grand Crossing supportive living facility was shot to death early Monday morning when Chicago police said he approached officers with a knife. Another patient was found stabbed to death on the premises.

Around 2:50 a.m., officers responded to a call of a person armed with a knife at the Grand Regency of Jackson Park in the 1400-block of East 75th Street. Officers found the unit where the man resided and tried to speak with him.

When he finally opened the door, officers said they were confronted by the resident, who was armed with a knife. Officers deployed their Tasers, which did not subdue him. The man continued to advance toward the officers, at which time police said officers discharged their weapons, killing him. A knife was recovered.

The man, who was reportedly in his mid-40s, died on the scene, according to news reports. His identify has not yet been released by police. The identity of the man killed by police has not yet been released.

A 58-year-old man, identified by the Cook County Medical Examiner as Keith Harding, was found in his unit with lacerations to his arm and neck. His death was later classified as a homicide. Police believe the suspect to be the same man in the police-involved shooting.

The facility is listed by the Illinois Department of Aging as a supportive living facility for people with disabilities.

Several residents told ABC 7 Chicago they have no idea what may have led to the confrontation with police. They said he kept to himself. Other residents told the TV news station they have concerns about their safety.

The Civilian Office of Police Accountability is investigating. The officer(s) involved will be placed on administrative duties for 30 days.
