Fatal South Side Shooting Among 5 During New Year's Holiday Weekend

Gunfire led to five fatalities in Chicago over the weekend, one of which was in Gresham.

The weekend's first of five fatal shootings was reported around 9:40 p.m. on Friday in the South Side's Gresham neighborhood, where a 15-year-old boy was found shot in the head.

The boy's name had not been released as of Monday morning. He was found in an alley in the 8100 block of South Bishop, according to reports. The incident was one of five fatal shootings that occurred between Friday evening and 11 p.m. on Sunday. Other deadly incidents were reported in Uptown, West Garfield Park and Austin.

The weekend also saw 41 nonfatal shootings — one fewer than those recorded over the same holiday weekend last year. The spree followed news of 2016 being among Chicago's bloodiest years — 762 total homicides; an average of two per day.
