E. Coli Recall Affects Dozens of Products at Major Retailers

E. coli in Costco’s “Chicken Salad made with Rotisserie Chicken” has been traced to a diced celery-and-onion blend used in dozens of products produced by a range of stores, including Costco, Walmart, Sam’s Club, Target, Starbucks, Safeway and various supermarkets and convenience stores.

One product was distributed in Illinois — CST Celery Sticks 4” 8/5# Bag — sold by Costco.

Tests have linked the E. coli to Taylor Farms of Tracy, CA, according to the FDA.

Most of the recalled products using produce from Taylor Farms were distributed in the western United States, primarily California, Nevada, Washington, Oregon, Idaho and Arizona.

The tainted chicken salad has sickened at least 19 people in seven states. Two have developed kidney failure but no deaths have been reported.

The blend was also used in Thanksgiving stuffing and relish trays. The number of people sickened may mushroom today or in the days to come.

In all, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has announced a recall of 71 items, from wraps and potato salad to Asian and Italian inspired items.

According to the FDA:

Escherichia coli O157:H7 is a bacterium that causes a diarrheal illness often with bloody stools. Although most healthy adults can recover completely within a week, some people can develop a form of kidney failure called Hemolytic Uremic Syndrome (HUS). HUS is most likely to occur in young children and the elderly. The condition can lead to serious kidney damage and even death.
