TINLEY PARK, IL — Police have brought charges against the father of Mia Maro, a 17-year-old girl who was killed Sunday in her Tinley Park home.

Mohammed Almaru, 42, was charged with first-degree murder in the death of his daughter Sunday evening. According to police, Almaru had cuts on his wrists and throat when officers arrived and also had taken pills.

Almaru was taken to the hospital as police found Mia's body. According to the Cook County Medical Examiner's Office, the girl's death was a homicide as a result of multiple injuries all over her body.

Tinley Park Police Chief Matt Walsh said Mia had bruises throughout her body and that medical professionals could not determine a singular cause of death.

Officials said Maro, a student at Andrew High School, was found dead at a home in the 7800 block of West 167th Street shortly before 5 p.m. Sunday.

When police arrived, officers said they found the girl in a "lower level of the home." Walsh said Almaru's sister was the one who called police, but did not immediately know who else was in the home at the time of Mia's death.

A message sent to parents from Andrew High School Principal Abir Othman confirmed Mia's death, stating guidance counselors would be available for students throughout the week.

According to Walsh, Almaru has been "in and out of consciousness" and is not cooperating with the investigation.

Mia's mother, Audrey Jorgensen, suffered a brain injury three years ago and had since been taken care of by Mia and her two brothers, according to family members.

Walsh said Tinley Park police were unaware of any previous domestic violence incidents at the Almaru home and did not comment on whether or not Jorgensen's injuries were inflicted by Almaru.

According to court records, Almaru was charged with domestic violence against a family member in 2002 in his former town of Alsip.
