Fire Prevention Week In Homewood: Virtual Open House Event

The annual open house event has gone virtual amid the COVID-19 pandemic. The week long of events are now available online for residents.

HOMEWOOD, IL — National Fire Prevention Week is here and the Homewood Fire Department's annual open house event has been converted to an online week of events for residents to enjoy at home.

The National Fire Protection Association— the official sponsor of Fire Prevention Week for more than 95 years—said Fire Prevention Week is Oct. 4 to Oct. 10. National Fire Prevention Week is observed in the United States and Canada, according to Wikipedia.

Families can go to the village's website and see a list of activities for each day of the week, including a virtual tour of the fire department, how to use certain fire protection gear and answers to questions residents submitted to firefighters at the end of September.

The annual outing was held as a one-day event in the past. This event has been ongoing for decades, according to the village and offers interactive games and prizes.

Residents can participate in the Escape Planning challenge to possibly win a pizza dinner, delivered by the Homewood Fire Department. To win, families have to share two-ways out of every room in their home and have an assigned meeting place outside of the house for the family to gather. More information can be seen here.

Another interactive challenge for those to participate in include an interactive comic book contest to submit a comic about a fire safety superhero. The fire department said to make the villain in the comic some sort of fire hazard and to make the story tell the reader something about fire safety.

A virtual tour of the firehouse can also be seen in the line up of events. The tour includes the station, ambulances, trucks and engines.
