Thief Takes Gifts From Kid's Party

The father of a child who was having a birthday party at Tinley Fitness Center, 17500 S. Duvan Drive in Tinley Park, called police when he returned from the pool area to find all the birthday cards on the gift table missing.

They were stolen between 5 p.m. and 6 p.m., the man said, and he closed the party room's door when he went down to the pool. Witnesses said they believed a juvenile who was fulfilling his court-ordered community service may have taken the cards. The juvenile denied doing so, police said, but the case remained under investigation June 25. Missing gift cards were worth $60 and the envelopes contained a total of $40 cash.

iPods Snagged, Sold at GameStop

Three iPods were taken from a mother and daughter living in the 8100 block of Valley View Drive in , police said. The 16-year-old victim noticed the iPods missing after she heard at school that someone who slept at her house sold the devices at GameStop. Police found the three iPods at the store and said they were sold around 5 p.m. June 21. Surveillance footage, however, doesn't show the friend selling the iPods, but rather an adult man, police said. The case remained under investigation June 25.

Possession of Drug Paraphernalia

Police were called around midnight to the 18100 block of Rita Road in where someone said a man was entering several cars in a parking lot.

Officers found Ryan R. Abney, 19, of the 5300 block of 175th Street in Tinley Park at the scene. They said Abney told them he and his friends were "car hopping" in the area and looking for unlocked vehicles. Abney only took loose change from one of the cars, according to the report.

While searching him, officers found a glass pipe with marijuana residue inside tucked in his waistband, the report said. He was charged with possession of drug paraphernalia. Other charges may be pending should victims of the burglaries come forward, police said.
