Heartless Crook Steals Money Donated to Sick Kids

He stole the donation jar off the counter of a Tinley Park gas station.

TINLEY PARK, IL — A heartless crook stole money donated to sick children. The thief also took three sandwiches.

A donation jar for Children's Miracle Network Hospitals was swiped off the counter of the Speedway station on 80th Avenue near 183rd Street last month.

The man was riding in a gray Dodge Caravan that pulled into the station shortly before midnight. Police said he had facial hair, was wearing a black shirt, jeans and a backward baseball cap. He was carrying a purple backpack.

The Caravan was driven by a man “wearing what appeared to be a Trace Ambulance shirt,” police said.

The two men split up after they walked into the service station. The one with the backpack grabbed three sandwiches and the donation jar, police said, then took off.

The Speedway manager explained that he usually chains down the donation jars, but the chain for that one was broken.

There was about $120 in the jar, police said, and the theft was captured on video.
