Services Set For Beloved Wrestling Coach Killed In Explosion

Visitation has been set for a Victor J. Andrew High School wrestling coach who died in an explosion this week.

TINLEY PARK, IL — Services have been set for a beloved Victor J. Andrew High School wrestling coach who died in an explosion at a petroleum plant this week.

Dru Worker, 25, died in the April 25 explosion at Seneca Petroleum in Lemont. Worker, who was said to be a Homewood resident, was remembered by colleagues as a "selfless ... great man" for his contributions as a mentor and coach at the Tinley Park high school.

Andrew High School Head Wrestling Coach Peter Kowalczuk said he was "truly devastated" by the news of Worker's death.

"He was a great man that was extremely dedicated to helping others grow in the sport of wrestling," Kowalczuk tweeted.

"During his time with the program he was selfless, put the athletes first, and showed amazing promise as a coach," Kowalczuk said. "Dru and I had grown close over the last couple of months, as coaches do over the course of the season. He was honest, caring, and pushed me to be a better coach."

Worker was also an accomplished wrestler at Mount Carmel High School. A social media account for supporters of its wrestling program also paid homage to Worker.

"The Caravan suffered a big loss yesterday: 2016 Alumnus Dru Worker tragically died in a work accident," the page reads. "Dru was a CCL Champ and All-state wrestler on the nationally renowned 2016 team. At this time, please pray for Dru and the entire Worker family..."

Visitation for Worker will be held Saturday, May 6, from 10 a.m. to 7 p.m. at Lawn Funeral Home, 17909 S. 94th Ave. in Tinley Park.
