The Tinley Park–Park District is looking to fill three positions: A part-time laborer, a landscape specialist and an equipment operator.

TINLEY PARK, IL — The Tinley Park–Park District is looking to fill three positions: A part-time laborer, a landscape specialist and an equipment operator.

The Part-Time Laborer is someone with demonstrated skills in general park maintenance duties. Responsibilities for this position include, but are not limited to; general park maintenance and site clean-up, athletic field maintenance, snow removal, custodial maintenance, as well as routine tasks and projects. A maintained clean, valid Driver’s License is required.

  • Require weekend work on Saturdays and Sundays, 7 a.m. to 12 p.m.
  • Weekday Winter hours range 10-25 hours/week (in addition to the required 10 weekend hours)
  • Weekday Summer hours average 35 hours/week (in addition to the required 5 weekend hours)
  • Scheduled hours are based on workload

The qualified individual should be well motivated, and possess good decision making and leadership skills. Must be willing to work in various weather conditions. Basic knowledge of hand tools and small machinery is a plus. Must pass pre-employment physical and drug screening.

The Landscape Specialist works under the supervision of the Park Foreman and is responsible for skilled work involving the construction, repair, and upkeep of all aspects of landscape as they pertain to Park District grounds and facilities. The position is full time, 40 hours per week plus benefits and requires flexibility to work some weekends/evenings and overtime as needed. Normal work schedule is Monday through Friday; 6:30am-3:30pm.

The candidate must possess a practical knowledge of equipment and tools used in park maintenance activities; a specialized training or experience in turf management, arboricultural, horticultural practices, and landscape construction; skills in minor repairs and use of hand and power equipment; an ability to service equipment used and to detect operating defects; an ability to operate snow removal equipment and properly train employees.

Education and Experience requirements include: High school diploma or equivalent. Three years of experience in horticulture, park maintenance, or related full-time work. Must be familiar with horticulture best management practices. Must be able to obtain and maintain an Illinois Pesticide Applicator’s License in Right of Way, Turf, Pest, and Ornament control. Must possess a valid Illinois Driver’s License. Must have or obtain certification in CPR, First Aid and AED within six months of employment. Working knowledge of computers with experience in Excel and Word. Formal education in horticultural studies preferred.

The pay for this job is $19 to $23 per hour, depending on experience. The Equipment Operator works under the supervision of the Park Foreman and is responsible for operation of equipment used for mowing, landscaping, snow removal, athletic field maintenance, and other related tasks as they pertain to the care of the District’s Parks and Facilities. This position requires a working knowledge of the operation and use of specialized and heavy motor equipment in general construction and maintenance activities. Basic knowledge of hand tools, carpentry, painting, electrical, and plumbing is required. Other responsibilities include but are not limited to playground inspection and repair, tree, shrub, and turf care, supervision of part time and seasonal employees, some custodial duties, and event set-ups. This position is for Full-Time employment/40 hours per week plus benefits and requires flexibility to work some weekends/evenings and overtime as needed.

Education and Experience requirements include: High school graduate or equivalent. Experience performing a variety of semi-skilled mechanical and manual tasks in the maintenance and operation of automotive or related maintenance equipment is required. Two years of park and/or landscape maintenance experience preferred. Must maintain a valid Illinois Driver’s License and possess a good driving record. Must maintain an Illinois Pesticide Operators license. Must have or obtain certification in CPR, First Aid and AED within six months of employment. A mandatory physical, drug screening, and criminal background check are required prior to employment.

The pay for this job is $15 /hour plus overtime.
